- Colbert Bump: The comic strip's whole existence was only brought into public recognition when YouTuber Quinton Reviews decided to look for Gnorm Gnat strips. It was also featured by Super Eyepatch Wolf.
- Creator Backlash: To an even greater extent than Gnorm Gnat; while Davis is happy to mention and deprecate Gnorm Gnat when speaking about his past before Garfield, he almost never mentions Jon at all.
- Keep Circulating the Tapes: Prior to 2019, almost no strips circulated. One of the few that did was published in the Garfield anthology 20 Years and Still Kicking, while others cropped up in Garfield at 25: In Dog Years I'd Be Dead. The strips as a whole were never circulated outside of a regional Indiana newspaper, only being unearthed in July 2019 by Quinton Reviews. Even so, Jim Davis hardly mentions the existence of this strip.
- Popularity Redo: A number of early Garfield strips are redone versions of Jon strips. Towards the end of Jon's run (by that point renamed Garfield), a few non-bug related strips of its predecessor Gnorm Gnat were also remade into Jon strips.
- Similarly Named Works: The strip was renamed Garfield later in its run, not to be confused with the retooled and syndicated Garfield.
