- He was an amateur mycologist (mushrooms) and co-founded the New York Mycological Society.
- He was so good at mycology that, for a while, he had an income stream from regularly appearing on an Italian TV game show, Lascia o Raddoppia ("Double or Nothing"), where it was his specialised subject. To the Italian public he became famous not so much for his music, as for being that weird American guy on TV who knew a lot about mushrooms.
- Cage was also a writer in addition to a composer; M: Writings '67-'72 compiles at least some of this work. As can be expected of Cage, his writings were fairly out there in both content and formatting.
- Production Posse: He worked most often with two people: Choreographer Merce Cunningham and pianist David Tudor.
