Trivia / Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds

  • Orphaned Reference: The Black Smoke is only ever mentioned as not working against the Thunder Child. It is also briefly mentioned during the scene at the Parson's house. The part where its nature and threat is explained was cut for time.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Jeff Wayne originally wanted John Lodge to sing lead vocals on "Thunder Child", in an homage to Lodge's Vocal Tag Team with Justin Hayward in The Moody Blues (especially as Hayward sang the previous song on the album, "Forever Autumn"). Lodge recorded a take of the song but Wayne felt his vocal timbre wasn't strong enough for its key, so Wayne eventually took Chris Thompson from Manfred Mann's Earth Band instead.
    • Initially Jeff Wayne wanted to write a love song similar to "Forever Autumn" for the album. He eventually decided to just use Forever Autumn rather than write a new song.
    • He also wanted to book Carlos Santana for "Horsell Common and the Heat-Ray," but unfortunately the deal fell through.
    • Before settling on Wells' novel, he and his wife briefly considered The Day of the Triffids as a candidate.
