  • Billing Displacement: Anna May Wong - who was experiencing the height of her popularity in the UK - is top-billed, even though Gerrit and Nettie would be more prominent in the story. She actually doesn't appear until half an hour into the film.
  • Executive Meddling: The novel's setting of Salem was changed to Bristol because the studio thought audiences could relate to a British setting better.
  • Fake Nationality: Mildly for Anna May Wong - who although Chinese was third-generation born in San Francisco. Taou Yen is a Chinese princess who has never left her home before.
  • Missing Episode: The original silent version is considered lost.
  • No Export for You: The film wasn't seen in America until it aired on television at the end of the 1940s.
  • Playing Against Type: Anna May Wong was typecast as the Dragon Lady in Hollywood or else the Beautiful Slave Girl. Taou Yuen is a highly intelligent Proper Lady who is also a Silk Hiding Steel. That being said, she does flirt with being a Dragon Lady in the film's climax.
  • Uncredited Role: Mavis Claire is uncredited for playing Gerrit's niece Laurel.
