- According to author Martin Baynton, Jane is aware of Jester's feelings for her but doesn't want romance to get in the way of her training to be a knight.
- Baynton is also on record stating that Jane felt that if she did wear a dress, it would be seen as backsliding from her goal to be a knight, especially in the eyes of her mother.
