  • Creator Backlash: Xavier Dolan has publicly stated on several occasions in the years following the film's release that he considers it deeply flawed, has some difficulty rewatching it, and likens it to being made by a different person. However, he explained that his dislike stems from his want to continuously improve as a filmmaker, and as a result, he considers the film far below the creative capabilities he'd build over time. He also noted that he is understanding of people who love the film and doesn't want to invalidate their experience, and that the film was at the very least an unpretentious, completely honest expression of who he was at the time.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: As well as Xavier Dolan as Hubert, his on-screen boyfriend Antonin was played by François Arnaud, who came out as bisexual years later.
  • Write What You Know: Like Hubert Minel, Xavier Dolan is gay, had a strenuous relationship with his mother in his teen years, and was sent off to boarding school by her.
