• Enforced Method Acting: Joe Dougherty, Porky's voice actor at the time, had a very real stutter. While it gave Porky a distinctive voice from all the dime a dozen Mickey Mouse falsettos littering the cartoon industry of the time, Joe's inability to control his stutter made recording sessions an absolute nightmare—Friz Freleng even quipped that the studio would've had a fit if it knew how many sound recordings they went through just to get his lines right. This was the reason why Dougherty was recast with Mel Blanc two years later.
• First Appearance: This short was made to introduce several characters who could potentially become popular with audiences. Among them, Porky Pig is the only one who managed to become truly iconic. Beans the Cat was also introduced in this short and appeared in ten more shorts afterwards, but was far less successful than Porky.
• Follow the Leader: This cartoon was intended as the first in an animated equivalent of the Our Gang comedies (known today as The Little Rascals). Of course, it didn't pan out that way.
• Write What You Know: Freleng based the characters in part on his childhood memories.
