- Creator Killer: In addition to killing the franchise, Virtual Hydlide effectively killed off developers T&E Soft, who stumbled on for a few more years by focusing exclusively on developing golf simulation games, before calling it quits in 2005.
- Dueling Games: Believe it or not, the original came out a year before The Legend of Zelda. Both are top-down adventure games with a large amount of Guide Dang It!, but the latter handily beat the former at every turn.
- Franchise Killer: Virtual Hydlide for the Sega Saturn was panned by critics and is considered the worst game in the series, killing off any chances for another installment.
- Late Export for You: Japanese microcomputer release: 1984; American NES release: 1989, making the port way outdated by the time it hit American shelves. The same happened to Super Hydlide, further tainting the franchise.
