• What Could Have Been: It is mentioned that Gunny Highway was in the Army in Korea, not the Marines. This is because the film’s script was originally for Highway to be an Army Sergeant First Class being assigned to a Ranger platoon. The Army however took issue with many aspects of the script including Highway’s drunkenness, and they wanted the movie to showcase the increasing role that women were playing in the Army. The script was altered to turn Highway into a Marine gunny because the Marine Corps was willing to provide technical assistance in return.
