Trivia / Hang Time

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Bill Fuller was a former NBA player, as was his portrayer Reggie Theus. Averted with Mike Katowinski, whose background was in basketball, whereas Dick Butkus' was in football.
  • Billing Displacement: Gradually happened over the course of the series, as the new additions to the cast were added to the roster usually in the order they joined the show.note  By Season 6, this meant that Daniella Deutscher (who kept top billing throughout the series), Megan Parlen, Adam Frost and Amber Baretto – in that order – were billed prior to everyone else in the main cast (whereas Frost and Baretto were billed sixth and seventh – before Reggie Theus – when they first joined in season three, and Parlen was billed fourth in season one).
  • The Cast Showoff: Practically every episode shows off the cast's basketball playing ability, which definitely took quite a bit of practice. Whenever they make a shot, the studio audience definitely was impressed. Reggie Theus shows off his ability in a couple of episodes, though he had to intentionally miss free throws and a dunk for a storyline in which Coach Fuller gets into a shooting slump in "Not a D'Amata".
  • Dawson Casting:
    • Varies among the cast members (some were played by teens – at least initially during their runs, others were played by actors around at least college age); the least believable of the actors playing teenagers was Kevin Bell (who played Josh in season two), who clearly looked like he was in his mid-20s.
    • There's an egregious example in Anthony Anderson, who began playing high school student Teddy at age 26!
    • Tracy, Teddy's love interest in "The Sure Thing" and "Green-Eyed Julie," is supposed to be a Deering student but her portrayer, Susan Patterson, was clearly in her early 20s.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Hang Time has not been syndicated in North America since 2004, when it aired in reruns on ABC Family. It's currently not available on any streaming service either.
  • The Other Darrin: Mary Beth's parents are first played in "Son-in-Law" by John H. Brennan and Lucy Butler; the following season in "Mary Beth's Parents," they are played by Michael Bryan French and Cristina Raines.
  • Recycled Set: The ski lodge set used in "Mary Beth's Parents" was the same one used in the second season of Saved by the Bell: The New Class when the kids worked at Screech's uncle's ski resort.
  • Romance on the Set: Daniella Deutscher (Julie) and Jay Hernandez (Antonio) met while working on the series and married in 2006.
  • Typecasting: NBA player Reggie Theus playing former NBA player-turned-high school basketball coach Bill Fuller.
