Trivia / Half Baked

  • Acting for Two: Dave Chapelle plays Thurgood Jenkins and "Sir Smoka Lot".
  • California Doubling: Although the film is set in New York City, it was actually filmed in Toronto. It's blatantly obvious when the famous Sam the Record Man store appears across the street from where the NYPD horse is early in the film.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Snoop Dogg was originally slated to play "Sir Smoka Lot", but the studio saved money by having Dave Chappelle play the part. Snoop wound up in the film anyway, though.
  • Creator Backlash: While Neal Brennan has expressed how much he appreciates the cult following the movie received, he hates the movie, blaming Executive Meddling for shifting the movie away from his and Dave Chappelle's original vision.
    • Chappelle's been more amendable, but he agreed the Executive Meddling hurt the final product, saying the more juvenile tone turned it into "a weed movie for kids."
  • Enforced Method Acting: Jim Breuer was actually high on camera for one brief shot. Jim had finished filming as far as he knew and went to his trailer to partake in the "gift" the cast left for him. Meanwhile, Clarence Williams was not getting along with Dave Chappelle and demanded he shoot his remaining scenes in one day. Jim only had to appear in one shot in which he leans over Sampson and says "Sucks to be you, man!". Since he was already high by that point, he had to do the take while actually on pot. You can see the entire story here.
  • Hostility on the Set: Clarence Williams quickly became unhappy playing Sampson, and compromised with the production team by agreeing to shoot all of his scenes in one day (hence why Sampson is never seen outside of his throne room).
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: Samson is loosely based on famous New York weed dealer, Branson.
  • Referenced by...: In the music video for Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go", Spears recreates the "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, and fuck you, I'm out!" (albeit bleeped) scene. Guillermo Diaz, who played Scarface, makes a brief appearance in his uniform from the film flashing a thumbs up when Spears says, "You're cool".
  • What Could Have Been: Harrison Ford was originally planned to be in one of the "Types of smokers" cameos but declined the offer.
