- Creator-Driven Successor: To Soap, also created by Susan Harris. It has a very similar feel, of arc-driven over-the-top drama in the context of a half-hour sitcom. It has a token gay character who has actual stories. It even has the same style of Previously on…, ending with something like "Confused? You won't be after this episode of Hail to the Chief."
- Dawson Casting: Doug and Muffin (nominally both in high school) are played by 22-year-olds; Lucy is played by an 18-year-old.
- Fake Russian: Ivan Zolotov, played by American actor Dick Shawn (also known for playing the actor who plays Hitler in the original The Producers.) His accent is squarely modeled on Boris Badenov.
- Keep Circulating the Tapes: As a seven-episode flop, there has never been any major interest in a home video release of any sort.
- Playing Their Own Twin: Dick Shawn plays Premier Zolotov and his identical twin brother Ivan.
- Streisand Effect: An attempted invocation of it by courting controversy; unfortunately, unlike with Soap, the people who were supposed to be outraged didn't play along.
