Trivia / HBO

  • Direct to Video: As VCR's became more popular during the 1980s, HBO instituted a self-imposed policy of not playing any direct-to-video releases. Eventually they had to relax this edict once studios started turning out fewer films as the decade went on. Occasionally the channel even aired made-for-TV films such as The Miracle of Kathy Miller (CBS, 1981).
  • What Could Have Been: After Roseanne Barr's 1987 HBO special The Roseanne Barr Show proved a resounding success, HBO brass realized her act would make a good sitcom, but balked at producing it themselves because it was felt it wouldn't be right for HBO. Their instincts were proven right a year later when Roseanne began a successful nine-season run on ABC.
