Trivia / Gotye

Go To

  • Doing It for the Art: Gotye has expressed a general disinterest in earning money from music. "Somebody That I Used To Know", which has earned over 1.4 billion views on YouTube, has never been monetized with advertising, and he willingly gave 50% of that song's royalties to Luiz Bonfá's estate for the sample of his 1967 song "Seville".
  • One-Hit Wonder: He's known nigh-exclusively for "Somebody That I Used to Know". "Eyes Wide Open," his first single released after that song, barely touched the Hot 100 in the United States, and found only moderately better success on the Rock Charts. He's been more successful in his natives Australia and Belgium, however.
  • Reclusive Artist: Not that he outright avoids performing or otherwise making public appearances, and he's quite candid when he chooses to be, but ultimately, Gotye doesn't exactly crave the limelight. Even following the sudden international success of "Somebody That I Used To Know", he generally remained quite private and didn't seem to mind putting his solo music career on hiatus in exchange for working on other musical projects, including his drummer role in the band The Basics, and founding the Ondioline Orchestra.
