Trivia / Gorguts

Go To

  • Died During Production: Steeve Hurdle, despite leaving Gorguts, was still involved in music. His band Negativa was in the midst of recording material when he died, and it's not clear whether it was in a finished state or if it will ever be released.
  • Follow the Leader: The sound of Obscura was utterly unique when it came out. It proved influential on an entire generation of Death Metal bands that followed, however, as well as on some Black Metal bands (Deathspell Omega is a good example. Interestingly, Gorguts named Deathspell Omega as an influence on them with the material on Pleiades' Dust). Suffice it to say that without Gorguts (and a couple of other early acts - Immolation and Demilich stand out), modern "dissodeath" either wouldn't exist or would sound very, very different.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: CD editions of Obscura are super rare and go for hundreds of dollars in good condition. The album was re-released on vinyl, however. It was very unlikely that it will be re-released on CD, because the band have said that they like the fact that it is a collector's item. Fortunetly, it's finally being reissued on CD by Century Media. They're also printing another vinyl edition.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Longstreth, Marston, and Hufnagel.
  • Referenced by...: Several of their song titles are parodied by the weed-themed metal band Cannabis Corpse. "With Their Flesh, He'll Create" became "With Their Hash He Will Create"; "From Wisdom to Hate" became "From Wisdom to Baked"; "Faceless Ones" became "Weedless Ones"; "Considered Dead" became "Considered Dank". (While Cannabis Corpse Speaks in Shout-Outs with their song titles, the songs themselves are original material.)
  • Saved from Development Hell:
    • Colored Sands had five years worth of development before it came to fruition.
    • Obscura, too, because they found it impossible to get record labels interested in the completely unprecedented atonal death metal they'd composed until much later. Many of the songs were written and demoed as far back as 1993; only Demilich had done anything remotely like it at the time.
