Trivia / Ghosts of the Future

Please note links to lore (aka Word of God) may have spoilers. You Have Been Warned!

  • Ascended Fanon:
    • The inclusion of Scourge was inspired by Wolfupup9404's idea to add Scourge to her own Ghosts of the Future fancomic.
    • Silver and Blaze "holding hands while appearing threatening" in issue 15 was a fan's idea.
  • Breakthrough Hit: After a few fancomics, Ghosts of the Future was what kicked off Evan's comics career and landed her into the professional level at a young age.
  • Creator Backlash:
  • Inspiration for the Work: The Wish List and the Pokémon episode "The Tower of Terror" are some of the inspirations for Ghosts of the Future.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: Issue 16 is considered as such due to it being more focused on characters and self-contained.
  • Line to God: Evan Stanley has a personal Tumblr blog, Draw many Cartoon, where she has provided plenty of Word of God in the form of answers to fans' questions. She'll also answer questions on her Twitter and DeviantArt accounts.
  • Long-Runners: The comic has been running since 2007, and only four Chaos Emeralds have been recovered. Even though most of the plot has been set up already and the current Sonic the Continuation crossover arc as of March 2021 is the second-to-last arc, Evan being hired for official comic business means that this won't be finished anytime soon...
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: Stanley hosted a contest for the design of Silver's boxers, and swish42's dinosaur-print boxers was the winner and appeared in issue 7. Another contest for the design of Silver's boxers was held, but cancelled.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Author/artist Evan Stanley was eventually hired as writer and artist of the official Sonic comics thanks to her Awesome Art. She was presented this opportunity by simply being a Fandom VIP because of this comic and entering a fan contest in 2010 (surprisingly, she was only 17-18 and didn't even win). To reflect this, she has called herself a "professional Sonic Fan" and her Tumblr blog was named Professional Sonic Fan from 2012 to 2016.
  • Schedule Slip: While there have been many major schedule slips for various reasons, especially during issue 10 due to college, the schedule slips for issue 18 are insane, with the cover only coming over a year after the last page of issue 17, and page 12 (albeit uncolored) coming nearly a year after page 11. The former is confirmed to be because of Stanley's job as animator and storyboard artist of Concrete Genie and freelance work on Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW). The latter is confirmed to be because of her job as artist and lead writer of IDW Sonic, as well as other freelance work.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The comic was going to be set in Station Square, but Stanley reckoned it would take place in Peru in real life, which is too far and Stanley isn't good at Spanish in the first place.
    • Vennie's first two designs were drastically different and resembled more of Silver. Here's Vennie's third design, which is closer to her final design.
    • Sicily's concept design is different than her final design.
    • Nicole's role was originally fulfilled by an OC by the name of Nicolai the Lynx (mind you, this was before Stanley learned about Nicole's holo-lynx form).. Ghosts of the Future was originally gonna run on a Villain of the Week formula with the bigger conflict being the End of the World as We Know It, than have a main and long conflict with a Big Bad.
    • Ghosts was originally going to have not much plot and be endless, but more and the whole plot, including the ending, has been set up since issue 8.
    • An arc was planned which takes place in the Sol Dimension, and it was foreshadowed in issue 5, but it was dropped because Stanley felt it would be too gratuitous.
    • Evan Stanley has admitted that Vennie and Sicily were originally supposed to die and go Ax-Crazy, respectively, but her new co-writer, Okida, convinced her to give them better fates.
    • There was an announcement of a possibility of a one-shot human adaptation of Ghosts of the Future, but it's been left in the concept stage.
    • Stanley considered revamping her Original Characters from her previous stories before Ghosts, but she couldn't think of a right place for them. She has also made several original characters and Alternate Universe counterparts of canon characters which are never going to show up in the comic, such as Marine the Conspiracy Theorist.
    • Issue 15 originally did not have Silver and Blaze holding hands in one panel. Evan Stanley changed this when she saw a fan's idea of Ghosts of the Future Silver and Blaze “holding hands while appearing threatening”.
    • Scourge's original "boss" was Black Doom, but it was replaced with the Second Devourer from the Silver Age arc of Sonic Universe which Stanley wrote, because it was way easier to incorporate into the story.
    • The original Gratuitous Spanish dialogue in issue 16 was different (it was changed according to feedback from Spanish speakers to be more genuine):
Sonic: Sí, pero... ¿No es demasiado?note
Shadow: Si esto es, ¿qué más da?note  It's a party. Quit worrying and enjoy it.
    • The finale stream released on 20 January 2024 on Picarto and 6 April 2024 on Youtube revealed various information on the scripts, plot and characters for the comic.
      • The unreleased part of the story would involve a battle between the New Chaotix children (Silver, Blaze, Vinnie and Sicily), Shadow, the giant Shard and STC Sonic with GTOF Sonic inside him against STC Robotnik. Meanwhile, GUN would futilely try to fight off his forces before getting overwhelmed. Nicole would try to strike an alliance with Robotnik due to him having last Chaos Emeralds but would be brushed aside, so she pulls an Enemy Mine with the heroes instead. Tikal would be trapped as Tikallix, almost smashed before escaping to a shard of a Master Emerald. Zachery would attempt to hijack Robotnik but would fail miserably and be trapped in the Death Egg. After a massive battle, Fleetway Super Sonic appears in response to the Chaos energy being thrown around and absolutely tear up everyone involved. The result was a Death Egg on the verge of exploding which will take out a good chunk of San Francisco along with it. Kinotobor and Nicole manages to delay the ROCC's meltdown which allows Shadow to use Chaos Control to stop the timer altogether. After some quick planning, Shadow resorts to using the energy to kill two birds with one stone by using it to send the STC cast back to their own dimension, allowing it to explode relatively safely over there. However, the remaining unused energy would enter Shadow, frying all of his nanites and render him blind and unconscious. With the Death Egg gone, the heroes are plummeting to the ocean with Sonic and Shard stunned by the explosion of energy. Silver in his desperation gains the ability to fly with his powers and catches everyone. This massive explosion and energy surge would result in the Second Devourer, Scourge's boss entering Earth using Shadow as a puppet. Nicole would spasm and become good in response to its arrival, revealing that she is originally good but was corrupted by the Second Devourer to be orchestrate its attack on Earth and her corruption by it was cured by its arrival, as it fulfilled the program installed on her and setting her free. As the Second Devourer unleashes its smoke of death and petrification on the city, Sonic overconfidently thinks that he can just rush it as the Chaos Emeralds have been assembled and he can just beat it with his Super form, only for him to get devoured instead. Meanwhile, the others who are protected by Silver and Vennie's barrier return too late to see their parents turned to stone.
Afterwards, they would make their way to Angel Island as a refuge which has landed outside the coast, in where Nicole during her time as evil built a replica of the Space Colony Ark on the island. Nicole attempts to access the systems to let them in but as it was created during her time as evil, the systems shut her out as it doesn't recognise her. As such, the heroes would use various ways to break-in. After breaking in, the heroes reassemble and use the Master Emerald to restore Tikal and create a barrier around the whole complex, allowing them to enter the Second Devourer safely when it arrives.
When inside the Second Devourer, they run into Scourge and possibly Antique, who have been reduced to the Second Devourer's mouthpieces. After a quick battle, Vennie manages to snap Scourge back to his senses with her powers. They later go though a massive list of cameos of various Sonic timelines and worlds before reaching Sonic himself. Sonic has been reduced to a thrall just like Scourge and is barely holding on his sense of self. Shard realises that since his Chaos Drive is powered by the first Sonic ghost, he can use it to bring Sonic back by merging the two spirits. This succeeds but it causes Shard's death. Afterwards, Sonic, Shadow and Silver goes Super (or even Hyper) and blasts their way out of it from the inside, wounding it. After everyone has escaped, Silver pushes the SD out of their dimension through the hole it came though, essentially squeezing out the life it took from its victims for the last few centuries and restoring them.
The comic ends with the adults of the New Chaotix passing their duties to the children who become the new heroes, now that GUN has been neutered with Nicole's leaving and that there are now Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald to protect. Sonic, Shadow (who is still blind) and Tikal decide to stick around but take a backseat to heroism as their centuries-long duty is finally fulfilled. Rouge and Omega, restored by the Second Devourer's defeat, arrive and take care of the blind Shadow. Scourge and Antique make it back to Moebius. Scourge reunites with a restored Fiona and makes up with her.
      • The Black Knight arc would be a quest for the Holy Grail. Big the Cat would be the Fisher King. Robotnik from Satam would be Vortigern and Snively would be a Celtic warlord. Sonic and Metal Sonic/Shard would become Silver's sword and shield respectively.
      • Tails, Amy and Knuckles were supposed to show up as half-formed ghosts during the hunt for the Master Emerald shards and the heroes are supposed to restore them. However, this was dropped as Sonic isn't around and it would feel like cheap cameos being thrown out instead.
      • Sonic's confusion over why Blaze is in the future instead of the Sol Dimension during the Secret Ring arc would involve the Blaze from the Sol Dimension entering and causing havoc. This was quietly dropped due to making the story too complicated.
      • Regarding the person who would absorb the energy from the exploding Death Egg, it was initially Sonic instead of Shadow. Instead of frying nanites and inflicting blindness, Sonic would be sent back in time losing his memories, turning into Chaos. His identity had to be beaten back into him. Shadow was planned to die and become a Chaos ghost like Sonic but it was dropped.
  • Word of Gay: Evan Stanley has provided statements on how part of the cast are LGBTQIA+, such as that Sonic and Shadow had a romantic relationship once, Stanley predominantly regards Sonic as asexual and biromantic and Shadow as pansexual and greyromantic, Scourge is also asexual and biromantic, and Vennie is possibly lesbian.
  • Word of God: There is lots and lots of information about the setting and lore that's not mentioned in the comic itself to be found in Evan Stanley's personal Tumblr blog, Draw many Cartoon. This includes the following:
  • Write What You Know: Several elements are based on Evan Stanley's life. For example:
    • Silver, his sisters, and Blaze are all homeschooled and Stanley was homeschooled until high school.
    • Silver is interested in evolutionary anthropology, which Stanley is also highly interested in.
    • Issue 10 is titled "Masakatsu Agatsu" (spelled as "Masaka Agatsu" on the cover), which means "True Victory; Self Victory" in Japanese and is one of the concepts of aikido, in which Stanley has taken classes in for years). In fact, aikido influenced Evan Stanley's philosophical and spiritual beliefs which also influence this supernatural-themed comic.
    • Stanley broke her dominant hand at the age of 11 and didn't get it set or had pain medication for a few days. This pain is really reflected in the issue 17 incident, when Silver gets his hands impaled by Metallix.
    • Silver's sisters are based off Evan herself, with her various traits divided up among the sisters.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: The Secret Rings arc was ad-libbed instead of planned ahead, to the point it didn't do anything to drive the main plot forward and was aborted.
