Trivia / Generation P

Go To

  • Completely Different Title:
    • The title Generation П can be transferred to English in a straight way as Generation P, also because in the original it is mostly a Foreign Language Title. Still this book was translated to English with a title Homo Zapiens. Moreover in the UK it was published as Babylon.
    • In the Russian original Homo Zapiens is the title of the chapter 7 which is nearly entirely dedicated to the Authour filibuster, disguised as the Character Filibuster from the spirit of Che Guevara. He writes a scathing diatribe against the sores of the modern capitalism and consumerism , describing how they mutilate people.
  • In Memoriam: The novel is dedicated to the memory of the (Russian) middle class. It appeared in 1999 when that class was still suffering the consequences of the economic crisis which broke out in the August of 1998. It was so harsh that at one point it seemed that the middle class in the country simply ceased to exist, being demoted to poverty.

For the 2011 movie

  • All-Star Cast: Most roles in this movels are played either by famous actors or by cult, memetic figures in the Russian culture. This inclides Sergey Shnurov, Roman Trachtenberg, Renata Litvinova, Igor Grigoriev.
  • Development Hell: Despite the importance of this novel, there was no huge need for the film version, because "big literature" is a niche thing in modern Russia. Thus the shooting began in 2006 but was interrupted several times because the director ran out of budget. Later it always resumed. The movie was completed only in 2011.
  • Playing Against Type: Cinephiles might have known Vladimir Epifantsev only because of his role in the scandalous cult arthouse/grindhouse film The Green Elephant. However apart from that he starred in many Russian patriotic action flicks. In Generation P he convincingly plays an intellectual, a copywriter, who is not an action hero at all.
