Trivia / GLOW

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Several girls doubled up and played different characters.
  • Actor-Inspired Element: The majority of characters were developed when Matt Cimber watched the girls in training and based them off their own personalities.
  • Approval of God: Lisa Moretti (Tina Ferrari) gave her approval of the 2017 Netflix series, saying they did a "great job".
  • Breakup Breakout: Tina Ferrari went on to success in WWE as Ivory, the only GLOW girl to do so.
  • …But I Play One on TV: As this was the 80s and kayfabe was still heavily enforced, the girls were expected to stay in character whenever they were out in public. Even faces and heels had to room separately to preserve the mystique.
  • The Cameo: GLOW wrestlers made appearances on several popular television shows of the day, including The Jerry Springer Show and Married... with Children (in which Big Bad Mama slammed Al's face into the turnbuckle 100 times in a row).
  • Cast the Expert: Lauri Thompson was a trained dancer, making her apt to portray a cheerleader like Susie Spirit. She also recruited other dancer friends she had to play the other cheerleaders.
  • Creative Differences: David McLane's skits were filmed in his "office" — a phone booth on the strip. Very apropos. The documentary also skipped the most important event in GLOW: a seditious McLane forming POWW and taking most of their roster with him. To this day he won't really talk about GLOW.
  • Descended Creator: Cynthia Peretti took over from Mando Guerrero to train the cast members to wrestle, and later wrestled on the show herself as Pepper.
  • Executive Meddling: David McLane's initial vision for GLOW was more of a 'serious' wrestling show. Matt Cimber the director wanted more comedy skits and campiness. POWW was closer to McLane's original vision, as was WOW when it was revived in 2012.
  • Fake Nationality: The majority of the Foreign Wrestling Heels - Godiva, Ninotchka, Matilda The Hun, Major Tanya, Palestina, Little Egypt - were played by American girls.
  • I Am Not Spock:
    • As was the standard practice at the time, faces and heels were kept separate and required to stay in-character most of the time. So it doesn’t matter that Colonel Ninotchka is Lori Palmer or that Tina Ferrari is Lisa Moretti, because to each other they’re Colonel Ninotchka and Tina Ferrari.
    • Some kid stole his mother's wedding ring, stuffed it in a white envelope and mailed it directly to Babe as a proposal. Less funny was Lori being proposed to by a dude who later dumped her once he realized "Ninotchka" wasn't real.
  • One of Us: No less than six-time world champion and WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin has stated on many occasions be a fan.
  • The Other Darrin: Different girls played Dementia, Liberty and Corporal Kelly.
  • Playing Against Type: A retroactive example. Ivory was primarily known as a bitchy heel (though turned Face towards the end of her career). Tina Ferrari on the other hand was a Face.
  • Real-Life Relative: The Heavy Metal Sisters were played by actual sisters.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: Jailbait appeared in the intro and wrestled a few house shows, but never appeared on television because she injured her knee.
  • Throw It In!: Godiva sarcastically suggested a horse to ride during her entrance. Management got her one.
