Trivia / Freddy Got Fingered

Go To

  • Box Office Bomb: Budget, $14 million. Box office, $14.3 million. Tom Green himself has been very defensive of this movie, and pointed out in an interview that it made a lot more on home video, while also claiming that a lot of underage fans bought tickets to see Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles and snuck in to see this movie instead.note  He wasn't wrong about the home video part - it made another $24,300,000.
  • Broke the Rating Scale: Roger Ebert refused to assign a star rating to the movie. Ebert suggested that like John Waters's Pink Flamingos, this movie should not be considered a film but an object.
  • The Cast Showoff: Tom Green did all of his own stunts and skateboarding. It was actually a huge risk because any injuries he might have suffered would've cost the film its star and director.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • The French title, "Va te faire foutre, Freddy!" translates as "Go fuck yourself, Freddy!" in English.
    • In Japan, it was called Freddy no Waisetsu na Kankei ("Freddy's Obscene Relation").
    • It became Fuera de casa ("Out of Home") in Latin America and Freddy el colgao ("Freddy the Wacko") in Spain.note
  • Copiously Credited Creator: Directed by, co-written by, and starring Tom Green.
  • Corpsing: Even though Jim is meant to be furious at Gord during the "Daddy, would you like some sausage?" scene, Rip Torn is clearly trying his hardest not to crack up at the absurdity of the scene.
  • Creator Backlash: In a 2001 Teen People interview, Eddie Kaye Thomas (Freddy Brody) called this the worst movie ever.
  • Creator Couple: Tom Green's then-fiancée Drew Barrymore played Davidson's receptionist.
  • Creator Killer: Oh, so much. This was Tom Green's first feature film as a director...and his last. It wasn't just his film career that stalled out, either; right after this, The Tom Green Show got a retool into The New Tom Green Show which had a talk show format, and got cancelled by MTV after a few weeks. Plus, as all this was going on, Jackass became the next big thing in shock humor. It was really a combination of those things, but by and large, this movie is the main catalyst for Tom Green falling from the limelight.
  • The Danza: Julie Hagerty plays Gord's mother... Julie Brody.
  • Deleted Role: A scene where Stephen Tobolowsky played Gord's uncle who works at a cheese factory was cut from the movie. Tobolowsky's character was meant to introduce Gord to the factory, and they pay homage to I Love Lucy by doing a gag making cheese sandwiches.
  • Executive Meddling: The end where Andy gets chopped up by an airplane propeller brought the film dangerously close to earning an NC-17 rating. His cries of "I'm OK!" were dubbed in to prevent this.
Green: "They slammed us with an NC-17 rating. That's like, Porn—with Murder".
  • Meme Acknowledgment: Tom Green personally requested to end the movie with the song "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem because it included a Shout-Out to Green's "The Bum Bum Song."
  • Playing Against Type: Harland Williams as the Straight Man.
  • Star-Derailing Role:
    • The film pretty much killed the career of Tom Green, with his variety series The Tom Green Show being simultaneously retooled into a talk show format to become The New Tom Green Show and subsequently cancelled by MTV after a few weeks. (Not helping matters was that as all this was going on, Jackass became the next big thing in shock humor.)
    • Eddie Kaye Thomas would also find his prospects reduced by this flop, with his career pretty much dependent on American Pie sequels (along with a supporting role in the Harold and Kumar films) for years afterwards. Furthermore, it didn't help that he'd have a major role in Dirty Love (another Razzie winner for Worst Picture) a few years after Freddy. It was only with the TV series Scorpion that Thomas rebounded (and considering the show's reception, it isn't saying much).
    • Julie Hagerty, who played the main character's mother, had established herself as a comedic actress before with her roles in Airplane! and What About Bob?, among others. After this film, her career has consisted mostly of bit parts in television and film. Hagerty's most significant work since then was a very minor role in the domestic drama Marriage Story.
  • What Could Have Been: Both Gene Wilder and Jerry Stiller were approached for the role of Jim Brody, but the two actors apparently refused the part due to finding the script too offensive, according to IMDB. The role went to Rip Torn instead.

Assorted Trivia

  • The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation hated this film, which was the big winner of the 2001 Razzies (taking home Worst Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay, and Screen Couple for "Tom Green and any animal he abuses"). Tom Green being a certified weirdo, he attended the ceremony considering it an honor, bringing his own red carpet and such.
