  • Approval of God: Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon, felt that the movie and Chadwick Boseman truly captured the spirit of her father and did him justice. Sharon appeared in ABC's A Tribute for a King to honor Chadwick when he passed away from colon cancer.
  • Method Acting: A mild example, but still counts. Alan Tudyk (Ben Chapman) and Chadwick Boseman (Jackie Robinson) deliberately avoided each other during the shoot, except on camera, so that any friendliness between the actors wouldn't obscure the animosity of their characters.
  • Star-Making Role: This is the film that made Chadwick Boseman a Hollywood leading man and would eventually lead to his most famous role as King T'Challa/Black Panther.
  • Wag the Director: Chadwick Boseman refused to let the filmmakers use a stuntman for the baseball scenes, as Boseman had spent hours studying Jackie Robinson's game film and wanted to do everything he could to mimic Robinson's movements onscreen.
  • What Could Have Been: Robert Redford was also considered for the part of Branch Rickey.
