  • Actor-Inspired Element: Jeremy Theobold, who the lead role was written for, recommended Lucy Russell and Alex Haw for their parts.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Jeremy Theobold cut part of his hair on camera for the lead's Important Haircut. Alex Haw and Lucy Russell likewise agreed to keep their hair as it was for the year it would take to finish the film.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Christopher Nolan's home was broken into, and he found himself wondering about the identity of the burglars.
  • No Budget: The budget was about $6,000; Christopher Nolan said that, even for a low-budget shoot, the production was "extreme".
  • One-Take Wonder: Due to the expensive film stock and the low budget, scenes were rehearsed meticulously beforehand so that the first or second take could be used in the edit.
  • Prop Recycling: Cobb steals a clock that would later be used in Memento.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • The film was shot in black and white, as Christopher Nolan owned no professional lighting equipment, and this made it easier to shoot just using available light.
    • Ironically, the house used for shooting most of the scenes (which belonged to the director's parents) was itself burgled during the shoot. Some of the items stolen in-universe were the things taken. Some inserts had to be scrapped as a result.
