- Career Resurrection: Julia Roberts, who suffered a breakdown in the mid-'90s, career-wise with flops such as Hook, I Love Trouble, Michael Collins, and Mary Reilly, and personally with her break-up with Kiefer Sutherland, was slowly rebuilding her career in the tail end of the decade, with hits like My Best Friend's Wedding, Stepmom, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride. It was this film not only becoming a hit, but also winning her an Academy Award for Best Actress, that revived her stardom.
- Deleted Scene: Nearly 30 minutes worth. Mostly just fleshing out sequences in the movie, but one huge chunk eliminates the fact that Erin collapsed from her illness – the cold she has turns out to be meningitis – and is hospitalized for a while.
- Dueling Dubs: There are two Japanese dubs for the film. The first premiered in 2000 for a home video release. Three years later, another dub premiered on TV Asahi's "Sunday Western Theater" block. Akio Ōtsuka voiced George in the home video dub, while his late father Chikao Ohtsuka voiced Masry in TV Asahi's dub.
- Fake American: Brit Albert Finney as Ed Masry.
- Playing Against Type: The abrasive Erin is a complete 180 from the "America's Sweetheart" type roles Julia Roberts is known for. In fact, she nearly wasn't cast because of this, as Steven Soderbergh felt she would be inappropriate.
- Uncredited Role: Edward L. Masry himself has an uncredited cameo as a diner patron. He can be seen sitting behind Erin, reading a menu.
- What Could Have Been: Goldie Hawn and Roseanne Barr were considered for the title role.
