- Banned in China: Obviously banned in the occupied Philippines, but now the book and its prequel are required reading for high school students, and a course about the author's life and works is a prerequisite in college.
- Role Reprise: As mentioned in Noli Me Tangere, Joel Torre would portray Simoun in the 1998 film of Rizal's life after previously playing Ibarra in television. He engages in Rage Against the Author against Rizal in what is presumed to be the author's hallucination the night before he dies. Complaining of his Undignified Death by suicide and hitting Rizal's lifelong vacillations, he inspires Rizal to finally consider the value of revolution by allowing his lamp to explode. We are shown the lamp exploding, while we are shown Simoun's face watching the conflagration, in a mixture of either rapture, shock or horror. We are finally shown Rizal with a face of Dissonant Serenity, having written this alternate ending until dawn, leading to his execution.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: See the main page for a gist of it. It is implied that this speech was directed towards Marcelo H. del Pilar and the other Ilustrados in Europe by Rizal after he gives up on their plans for assimilation, seeing it as futile.
- What Could Have Been: It has been stated that Rizal regretted killing off Elias from Noli Me Tangere. Elias would have been the protagonist of this novel instead of Ibarra/Simoun.
