- Ascended Fanon: A popular theory about the cause of the Mourning is that Cyre was claimed by the mists of Ravenloft. While this is still kept vague in 5th edition, the Ravenloft sourcebook "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft" included a possible nod to the theory with Cyre 1313, a train that attempted to flee Cyre on the day of the Mourning, but was delayed, and its spirits claimed by the Mist.
- Shrug of God: Some things are left intentionally vague for the DM to fill in.
- Word of God / Word of Saint Paul: Keith Baker gave Wizards of the Coast control over the setting's direction, but is still very active on forums and blogs, answering questions and writing articles about the setting he created. He has also put out supplemental books that flesh out the setting, and although he stresses that information within isn't "canon" as far as Wizards of the Coast is concerned, just about every fan treats it as such.
