Trivia / Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition

  • Ascended House Rules: A common house rule in 5E is for a skill check to succeed on a natural 20 roll automatically, and for it to automatically fail for a natural 1 (RAW, nat 1/nat 20 normally only applies to attack rolls and saving throws). One D&D at one point planned to implement this as part of its base rules; however, this was rolled back due to protests from community members, who preferred it remain a house rule due to the inevitable problems that would result from a natural 20 succeeding at any skill check.
  • Make-A-Wish Contribution: The Oblex was designed by Nolan Whale, a Make-A-Wish recipient who spent a day with the Wizards of the Coast team helping to create it. It's been called one of the scariest monsters in the entire game, as a creature who imitates its victims and absorbs its memories while killing them, to better impersonate them.
  • Orphaned Reference: Oath of Redemption Paladins originally had "Armor of Peace" (giving them high AC while not wearing armor or a shield) as one of their abilities when they were in playtesting, in order to emphasize their status as non-threatening emissaries of peace rather than holy warriors. When they were published in Xanathar's Guide to Everything this ability was removed, but their official illustration still shows them wearing priestly robes instead of armor.
