Trivia / Dublin Oldschool

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: Lisa in the play is said to be from Clondalkin, but they let Sarah Greene use her natural Cork accent in the film.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Emmett Kirwan joked to Seana Kerslake that she could have a part in the film if she wanted. When she said yes, the only part she could play was Jason's friend Lisa - which was already promised to Sarah Greene. So he created the character of Gemma, Jason's ex-girlfriend (who didn't exist in the play the film is based on).
  • The Cast Show Off: Emmet Kirwan demonstrates his slam poetry skills with Jason's multiple narrations throughout the film.
  • The Danza: Gemma's boyfriend Aaron is played by Aaron Heffernan.
  • Darkhorse Casting: The majority of the protagonists are played by actors on only their first or second film. Sarah Greene is the most recognisable name in the cast - from Penny Dreadful, Rebellion and Vikings. Seana Kerslake, who plays Gemma would be recognisable for the TV series Can't Cope, Won't Cope and Emmet Kirwan would likewise have some fame but that's about it.
  • Deleted Role: Nima Taleghani, who plays DJ Reck (the black British DJ wearing a camo hoodie) was filmed performing a rap live for the extras in the party scene - but it was cut from the final film.
  • Dyeing for Your Art:
    • Ian Lloyd Anderson went down to 10 stone and grew a beard to play Daniel.
    • Ciaran Grace bleached his dark brown hair blond to play Glen.
    • Sarah Greene is dark haired but lightened hers to play Lisa - who is introduced having her hair dyed.
  • Fake Brit: The British DJ Charlie Hayes is played by Irish actor Bryan Quinn.
  • Production Posse: Emmet Kirwan and Dave Tynan have collaborated multiple times, starting with Just Saying. This marks their first feature film together. The majority of the crew is made up of Dave Tynan's college peers.
  • Reality Subtext: Jason and Lisa being the closest of the peer group echoes the real life friendship between Emmet Kirwan and Sarah Greene. Sarah was even the first choice for the part when the adaptation came around.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Calum Jess, who plays the young Jason, has a striking resemblance to Emmet Kirwan.
  • Throw It In!: Emmet Kirwan and Seana Kerslake met for drinks at one point in London, and Emmet joked that there would be a part in the film if she wanted it (there wasn't). She agreed surprisingly enough, and so she was written in as Jason's ex girlfriend Gemma.
  • What Could Have Been: The play wasn't going to be turned into a film, but when Dave Tynan went to see it, he approached Emmet Kirwan and said "do you think you can make this into a film in eighteen months?"
  • Write What You Know:
    • Emmet Kirwan based the story on his own experience running into his estranged brother on the streets of London.
    • The incident with the hole in the wall during the rave was based on a party Emmet once went to. One DJ went to B&Q as soon as it opened to plaster the hole up.
