Trivia / Drawing Blood

  • Creepy Souvenir: In a real-life example worthy of a Poppy Z. Brite novel, a man immolated himself in a commercial mail facility where copies of this book where waiting to be shipped, allegedly permeating the books with the smell of cooked human flesh. These copies were auctioned by an independent bookseller as special "collector's editions" and can now sell for several hundred dollars' more than even a signed first edition of the same book.
  • Technology Marches On: Zach uses an acoustic couplernote  to access the internet. Eddy's also quite impressed that Dougal has a mobile phone.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Drawing Blood was originally titled Birdland, but this was changed at the behest of the publisher, who felt it was 'not a horror title'.
    • According to a 2021 interview with Billy Martin, back in 1994 some screenwriters pitched a film adaptation to Martin, but with Zach and Trevor's relationship changed from being explicitly romantic to them being very close friends. Martin wasn't impressed: "I told them I wasn’t interested; they wrote the thing anyway and sent it to my agent, where it died a merciful death."
  • Word of God: When asked about the fate of the two main characters, the author states that while a second book about Zach and Trevor didn't quite come to fruition (in part because of Martin/Brite leaving publishing and in part because of the unlikeliness of the characters ever stumbling into another supernatural adventure), fans may assume the pair are still together and living happily in Amsterdam.
