• Development Hell: The fourth book was mentioned to be in the works since Resurrection was released, but it didn't even receive a title until seven years later, and it still doesn't have a date.
• Executive Meddling: After completing the first Meg book, Alten began work on a thriller involving the Mayan doomsday prophecy, only for Doubleday's president to require him to turn it into another sea-based adventure, eventually titled Fathom, in order to make him "our new Peter Benchley". Alten and an assigned editor were roughly two-thirds of the way through it when Doubleday was bought out by German publisher and conglomerate Bertlesmann, who'd hated Meg, didn't want another sea-based book and subsequently fired Doubleday's president and cancelled Fathom. Alten subsequently managed to get the rights back and rewrote it as Domain.
