- Acting for Two:
- Garrick Hagon, who played Ky, also served as the voice of the Skybase public address system.
- John Hollis, who played Sondergaard, assumed an Australian accent to read the Hyperion pilot's dialogue.
- Creator's Favorite Episode: Bob Baker stated later on that he thought it was him and Dave Martin’s best work.
- Hostility on the Set: As was the case with "The Daemons", Jon Pertwee clashed with director Christopher Barry, resulting in the latter not returning to the series until Tom Baker was the Doctor.
- Renamed to Avoid Association: The Mutts were originally named Munts, until Terrance Dicks learned that the word was an anti-Black slur in South Africa.
- Similarly Named Works: "The Mutants" was previously the internal title for the show's second ever serial; due to the problems that this shared name presented, the older one was retroactively retitled "The Daleks".
- Wag the Director: Jaeger was scripted as a purely amoral Mad Scientist, but George Pravda persuaded director Christopher Barry that it would be more interesting to play him as someone who comes to realise how immoral his experiments are, but is too weak-willed to disobey the Marshal.
- What Could Have Been:
- Colin Baker was considered for Cotton. He would later play Commander Maxil in "Arc of Infinity" and the Sixth Doctor subsequently.
- A subplot in the script about cloning was taken out for being too complex.
- The Solonians' final mutated design was originally a shimmering globe.
- Working Title: Independence and The Emergents.
- You Look Familiar:
- George Pravda had previously played Denes, and would later play Castellan Spandrell.
- Christopher Coll had previously played Technician Phipps.
- Geoffrey Palmer had previously played Masters, and would later play Captain Hardaker.
