Trivia / Doctor Who S4 E8 "The Faceless Ones"

• Missing Episode: Episodes 2, 4, 5 and 6. Only the first and third episodes are in the archives.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Samantha was introduced with the intention that she'd become a full companion, but the actress who played her, Pauline Collins, declined. Much much later, she would play Queen Victoria in "Tooth and Claw", though.
  • There were a couple collaborations between Malcolm Hulke and David Ellis to make a successful Who story. Both had faced years of rejections for their writing, and decided to team-up to get one in. First, there was The People Who Couldn’t Remember, which went nowhere. Then, there was the The Big Store, which had aliens take over a department store. One of the species, called “the Chameleons”, could imitate human faces. Gerry Davis didn’t like the story, but thought the idea of the shape-shifting alien species was interesting, and had the duo write the story from scratch.

  • Bernard Kay (Inspector Crossland) had previously appeared as Tyler in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" and Saladin in "The Crusade".
  • Christopher Tranchell (Jenkins) had previously appeared as Roger Colbert in "The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve".
