- Acting in the Dark: River Song’s identity was top secret, even to the lead cast and crew. A read-through script had a fake ending to hide the truth.
- Ascended Fanon: In 1995, Steven Moffat came up with the idea that the word "doctor" itself comes from "The Doctor" and their interventions throughout space and time.
- Completely Different Title:
- The French title is "La Retraite du démon" (The Demon's Run).
- The Japanese title of this episode is "The Doctor's War".
- First Appearance: Of Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax.
- Inspiration for the Work: Steven Moffat wondered what would happen if the Doctor, traditionally a pacifist in adventures, had been provoked enough to create an army.
- Lying Creator: The BBC website made it sound like the Cybermen would be major enemies. In reality, they're merely cold open cameos.
- Prop Recycling: The Clerics' uniforms appear to be Airman Battle Uniforms, normally worn by the United States Air Force (at least in the early 21st century)
- Recycled Set:
- Those corridors on Demon's Run look awfully familiar.◊
- The room Amy's being held in was previously part of the abandoned spaceship in "The Curse of the Black Spot" and a chamber in the previous two-parter. The stairs leading up to the door are the giveaway feature.
- What Could Have Been: Originally Captain Jack Harkness was supposed to appear as part of Amy's rescue mission, however John Barrowman was unavailable due to filming conflicting with production on Torchwood: Miracle Day. Moffat said it was just as well, since they'd have to make the episode about not only Jack returning, but getting used to Matt Smith's Doctor.
- Working Title: Demons Run and His Darkest Hour.
- You Look Familiar: The Doctor's old acquaintences Strax and Vastra, even though we've never seen them before — but we have seen that actor playing a Sontaran and that actress playing a Silurian. In Strax's case the two characters were clones, so naturally they look alike. Vastra's actress played two different related Silurians in the last episode we saw her, so it seems that Silurians don't have much genetic variation.
