- Actor-Inspired Heroism: According to David Tennant on the DVD Commentary, when the Doctor breaks off Lucius's arm, the Doctor originally throws it to the ground to break apart. Tennant thought it was too violent for the character, and asked for it to be removed. Both he and Catherine Tate still think his move was unnecessarily "aggressive".
- Completely Different Title: The French title is "La Chute de Pompéi" (The Fall of Pompeii).
- Recast as a Regular: Caecilius is played by Peter Capaldi, the future Twelfth Doctor, while one of the priestesses is played by Karen Gillan, the future Amy Pond.
- Recycled Set: This episode was filmed on the same sets as Rome. No wonder the Doctor thought at first that they'd landed in Rome.
- Underage Casting: Lucius was written as man in his sixties. Phill Davis was only in his mid fifties when this was shot.
- Written-In Infirmity: Francesca Fowler suffered from a bad case of food poisoning during the filming of this episode, which has since been said to have helped contribute towards Evelina's ill appearance.
