Trivia / Doctor Who S2 E8 "The Chase"

Go To

  • Acting for Two: In a first for the series, Peter Purves plays both Ugly American Morton Dill and new companion Steven Taylor.
  • Fake American: Oh boy... the accents are just horrible.note
  • First Appearance: Of Steven Taylor.
  • Missing Episode: The clip of The Beatles is all that survives of that particular Top of the Pops episode. And even if it hadn't been "withdrawn, decommissioned, and junked", it would still be a Banned Episode because that's Jimmy Savile introducing them.
  • No Budget: According to the director, the reason why the swamp in Episode 5 is so sub-par — they had run out of money by that point.
  • Production Nickname: Fungoid Fred, Toadstool Taffy and Mushroom Malone were the names of the Fungoid costumes.
  • Reality Subtext: William Hartnell became friends with William Russell and Jacqueline Hill through the show’s run. So the melancholy felt as the Doctor saw Ian and Barbara go was real, especially since Hartnell was now was the only original cast member still left.
  • Recast as a Regular: Peter Purves went from playing a one-shot comic relief character to a main companion. In the same story.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The Beatles footage is not found on some home media due to rights problems.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Terry Nation’s script was considered too high-reaching, having sequences in Egypt and other planets besides Aridius, and had to be cut down.
    • The Beatles were supposed to appear at the beginning of the story as old men performing their 50th anniversary concert. While the group was interested, it was decided against by then-manager Brian Epstein. This turned out to be more fortunate in the long run, as the recycled Top of the Pops footage prevented the band's appearance on that show from being totally lost.
  • Working Title: Daleks III, The Pursuers and Dalek Three.
  • You Look Familiar: Edmund Warwick (the Robot Doctor) was Darrius in "The Keys of Marinus".
