  • Author's Saving Throw: Back in The Armageddon Factor, it was heavily implied that Theta Sigma was the Doctor's true name. The audience either ignored or were incredibly pissed off by this, until the Doctor says in this story that it was his college nickname.
  • Creator Couple: Annie Hulley is married to the director of this serial, Chris Clough.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: A long-standing fan myth claims that the third part of this story was to consist of animation rather than live-action.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Director Chris Clough wanted to shoot this story in black-and-white but was not allowed to. Sylvester McCoy said he would have begged to have it in black-and-white, as he thought the sets were lacking.
    • Originally, the story took place over several weeks. To compensate for the fact that all the action now took place over a single night, Graeme Curry decided to have Helen A's regime already crumbling at the start of the adventure.
    • Instead of the Waiting Zone, there was a prison called Arcadia, which was filled with distracting machines and games.
    • In the original script, Ace tricked Susan Q into helping escape instead of Susan doing so willingly.
    • Earl Sigma originally played the trumpet.
    • At one point, the Doctor and Ace were forced to preform for a crowd or else be executed. This was thought as too similar to "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy", and so was cut.
    • The Kandy Man was originally human in appearance and the fact that he was made out of sweets was rather subtle, chiefly being exhibited through having powdery white skin. Chris Clough and John Nathan-Turner wanted him to look more robotic. Writer Graeme Curry used his original intention when he novelised the story in 1990, and Big Finish also used this version in an Eighth Doctor story.note
  • Working Title: The Crooked Smile.
