  • Development Hell: Dan revealed in 2022 that he had conceived of a show, Dan is Not Okay, which would be about himself if he never posted to YouTube and going through therapy to explore his personal struggles in a comedic and dramatic way. Consistent reticence from YouTube about producing the show, fighting to make them reconsider making it, and capitulating to their conditions and requests ultimately amounted to nothing, with the project cancelled before YouTube Originals was shuttered. Dan said the show was still on the table through other means of production, but illustrated the draining and dispiriting struggles it had already gone through.
  • Screwed by the Network: Dan's video "Why I Quit YouTube" in 2022 discusses a passion project, a semiautobiographical comedy drama show called Dan is Not Okay, which he pitched to YouTube after they started creating programs for higher-budget productions like YouTube Red and YouTube Originals. Dan was met with roadblock after roadblock, however, with long stretches of time with no feedback from the company about the status or future of production and having to make a big presentation to get them to reconsider after they rejected it. Since the project had a poetic element from being hosted on YouTube, he pushed aside other offers and moved forward with some requested sacrifices to the vision and making content as one of the terms, doing everything asked of him to earn production for his project before another stretch of silence, a second rejection, and the later news that YouTube Originals would shut down.
