Trivia / Cynic

Go To

  • Creative Differences: Led to the dissolution of the Focus line-up, Tymon Kruidiner and Robin Zielhorst leaving the band after Re-Traced, and reportedly was a part of Sean Reinert leaving the band in 2015.
  • Development Hell: They've been a band for 34 years and have only released four albums.
  • He Also Did: Paul, Sean Reinert and Sean Malone have done a lot more than you think they have. As have some previous members of the band...
    • Paul wrote a column for a while. As you'd expect from him, it contains plenty of Cloud Cuckoolandering and Woobie material.
    • Paul produced an album of childrens' music for JIM CARREY, which was a companion to his childrens' book How Roland Rolls. A behind the scenes video can be found here and it's really bizarre.
    • Paul filed a patent in 1999 for a machine designed to assist people who have difficulty speaking. It was approved in 2002.
    • Paul played the guitar parts on the soundtrack for 3rd Rock from the Sun.
    • Sean Reinert played drums on Avalanche of Worms, an instrumental metal album by Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler.
    • Sean Malone has been a session musician on over fifty records to date, as well as being the author of four books.
    • Brandon Giffin was the bassist of The Faceless.
    • Max Phelps is the vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter of the band Exist and a live vocalist for Defeated Sanity, and is also a member of WAIT with his Exist bandmate Alex Weber and Charlie Eron.
  • Production Posse: Before Sean Reinert cut ties with him, he worked with Paul on a wide variety of production and songwriting work outside of Cynic.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Tymon Kruidiner, Robin Ziehorst, Max Phelps, Brandon Giffin and Matt Lynch.
  • Updated Re Release: Tymon's remix of "Wheels Within Wheels". Subverted as it's not official and was done long after Tymon left the band. He doesn't make any money off of it anyway, as he uploaded it on YouTube for free and the video is not monetized.
  • What Could Have Been: The video for "King of Those Who Know". The footage was apparently stolen by the director and never returned to the band.
    • The cancelled Cynic/Onward With Love European tour, the booking of which caused Sean to leave Cynic permanently.
    • It's also worth noting that if Sean and Paul had stayed in Death, Cynic's debut album would probably have never been recorded.
