Trivia / ContraPoints

  • Approval of God: Anita Sarkeesian has tweeted her love of the drawing of herself that appears throughout the series.
  • Bury Your Art: Natalie deleted all of the channel's old videos prior to "Decrypting the Alt-Right: How to Recognize a F@scist" due to them triggering such intense gender dysphoria (given that they were filmed and released prior to her transition) that she can barely watch them herself, let alone feel comfortable with the thought that they're still up online for the whole world to see.
  • Corpsing: Natalie sometimes has trouble taking herself seriously when filming extra-silly bits and occasionally leaves in moments where she breaks character.
  • Creator Backlash: Natalie has spoken about disliking her early work for several reasons: she has grown a great deal as a filmmaker, so some of what she dislikes is simply how crude her earlier videos are; she has also moved further to the left over the years since starting the channel; and most of all, the fact that she can't stand to see or hear herself from before she transitioned due to it triggering gender dysphoria, a reaction that is fairly common in the trans community.
  • Creator Breakdown: "Cancelling" and "Shame" largely differ from her usual politically-driven, analytical videos, since they were motivated by personal experiences that seriously impacted her mental health (becoming the subject of a mass online bashing and discovering her identity as a lesbian, respectively). "Beauty" qualifies as well, to a lesser extent.
  • I Am Not Spock: Natalie prefers to be referred to by her own name rather than "Contra" or "ContraPoints", since the former is the name of her character (and, well, herself) and the latter is the name of her show.
    • Natalie has had to point out before that Justine isn't supposed to be an Author Avatar. Apparently people make this assumption a lot because she's closer in appearance and politics to Natalie on an average day than Tabby and Tiffany, who she usually ends up on screen with.
  • Reality Subtext:
    • The Left was written and released soon after a controversy where a proportion of her fans turned on her after she shared photos of herself hanging out with a couple of anti-SJW YouTubers. The moment when Tabby scolds Justine for going to brunch with Jackie is a direct reference to the controversy.
    • The video Cancelling is basically dropping the “sub” part of this trope, as she directly and extensively addresses the mass controversy instigated by her commissioning controversial trans figure Buck Angel to voice act for her video Opulence.
    • The character Justine has an unrequited crush on many characters, including Tiffany Tumbles. In Transtrenders, she tries to deny her gayness but ends up admitting her love for Tiffany, who coldly rejects and insults her. Natalie later talked about her own shame in being a lesbian and having a crush on her best friend, another trans woman who probably had her own shame in herself (the other woman called relationships between two trans people disgusting).
    • Justine's descent into drug addiction in "The Hunger" mirrors Natalie's real life struggle with Opium addiction.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Natalie shared a love for chicken nuggies with fellow YouTuber Vaush.
  • Voice-Only Cameo:
