In 2017, Pierce confirmed in a Tumblr discussion that Briar is pansexual and Sandry is asexual.
What Could Have Been/: When writing The Will of the Empress, Pierce considered any of the four protagonists could have been revealed as homosexual specifically; Daja was established as such in the book, and as noted above she’s established Sandry and Briar as differently-inclined LGBTQI+ characters.
