- Billing Displacement: Although Johnny Depp is given second billing next to Juliette Binoche, he doesn't appear until 52 minutes into the film.
- The Cast Showoff: Johnny Depp plays guitar in three scenes and contributed two songs to the soundtrack.
- California Doubling: Although Johnny Depp lived in France at the time of filming, he doesn't appear in any of the scenes shot in France. All of his scenes were filmed on a set, or on-location in England. All of Judi Dench's scenes were filmed in England, as her husband was very ill during the shoot, and it was important for her to be close to home.
- Creator Couple: Lasse Hallström is married to Lena Olin.
- Fake Nationality: It should go without saying that, except for Juliette Binoche, pretty much none of the main cast is French.
- Font Anachronism: The film features a poster whose words are typed in ITC Benguiat, a typeface invented in 1978. Unfortunately, the movie takes place in the 1950s, which means ITC Benguiat wasn't invented yet.
- No Stunt Double: Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche jumped into the water themselves, even though they had stunt doubles.
- Real-Life Relative: In the Canadian French dub, Roux is voiced by Alain Zouvi. The latter's son, Frédéric Millaire-Zouvi, is the voice of Luc.
- Serendipity Writes the Plot: In the scene where Pere Henri is dancing, Alfred Molina was originally supposed to walk down the steps and see him. However, because he actually had a hurt toe, he just stood there instead of walking down the steps.
- What Could Have Been: Gwyneth Paltrow turned down the role of Caroline Clairmont.
