  • Breakthrough Hit: "Solsbury Hill", taken from this album, was Gabriel's first single to make the Top 20 in Britain and the Hot 100 in the U.S. The parent album was similarly successful in establishing Gabriel as a solo artist, peaking at No. 7 in the U.K. and at No. 38 stateside.
  • Creator Backlash: Gabriel was dissatisfied with Bob Ezrin's bombastic production of "Here Comes the Flood", so he recorded sparser versions of the song for Robert Fripp's 1979 solo debut Exposure and his 1990 Greatest Hits Album Shaking the Tree. He would also play it solely at the piano in live performances.
  • Executive Meddling: Producer Bob Ezrin disliked the planned line that would close out each of the choruses in "Solsbury Hill", "make your life a taxi, not a tomb;" though he appreciated the sentiment behind it, he considered the word choice unpleasant. After tossing around a few ideas, he and Gabriel settled on the line that ended up in the finished product, "grab your things, I've come to take you home."
  • Similarly Named Works: Both Gabriel and David Bowie have songs titled "Modern Love", though Bowie's is much more popular. In the same vein, Gabriel's "Slowburn" is titled similarly to Bowie's unrelated song "Slow Burn".
