Trivia / Call Me by Your Name

  • Billing Displacement: Despite Elio being the film's protagonist, Hammer is billed over Chalamet on the poster and in the opening credits.
  • Creator-Preferred Adaptation: Aciman himself has stated that he prefers the film's Adaptational Alternate Ending.
  • Dawson Casting: Timothée Chalamet was 20 while playing 17-year-old Elio, but his boyish appearance downplays this trope. Armie Hammer, meanwhile, was 30 and looked 30 even though Oliver is only 24, making the age difference between the two seem much larger than it was meant to be (not helped by Hammer being 6'5 and towering over his younger costar).
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: A now-deleted Sony Pictures ad on Twitter that used a picture of Elio and Mariza has it seem like the main couple of this film is going to be a straight one on its poster. Cue endless roasting by people parodying this mistake with Covers Always Lie versions of famous gay movies like Carol, Brokeback Mountain, Milk, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Kissing Jessica Stein.
  • In Memoriam: The film is dedicated to actor Bill Paxton who died in February 2017.
  • Referenced by...: Lil Nas X's 2021 hit single "Montero", which is from the perspective of a man asking another man to act on his romantic and sexual desires for him, uses "Call Me By Your Name" as an Either/Or Title, as it is the main line of its chorus. The singer later confirmed this was a direct Shout-Out to the film.
  • Star-Making Role: Prior to this film, Timothée Chalamet's filmography was mainly composed of minor roles. His Oscar-nominated turn as Elio catapulted him directly to fame, and he began booking high-profile projects with famous directors soon after.
  • Throw It In!: In the scene where Elio is waiting for Oliver (the Doveman remix of "Futile Devices" playing in the background), the film has light bleeding into it and you can see the sprocket holes. This was an accident which the director decided to keep, as it gave the scene an ephemeral quality.
  • Tourist Bump: Thanks to the movie's popularity, Crema, Italy (where it was filmed) is now a tourist destination.
  • What Could Have Been: While Sufjan Stevens composed original songs for the film, he turned down an additional offer from Guadagnino to narrate the film from the perspective of an older Elio.
