Trivia / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S3E18 "Earshot"

Go To

  • Completely Different Title:
    • Armenian: "Ձայներ" (Voices)
    • Finnish: "Kuulolla" (Hearing)
    • French: "Voix Intérieures" (Inner Voices)
    • German: "Fremde Gedanken" (Foreign Thoughts)
    • Polish: "Tajemnice Zdrowej Skóry" (Secrets of Healthy Skin)
    • Portuguese (Brazil): "O Alcance da Voz" (The Reach of the Voice)
    • Romanian: "Aproape" (Near)
    • Russian: "Голоса" (Voice)
    • Spanish (Latin America): "Alcance Auditivo" (Auditory Reach)
    • Spanish (Spain): "El Alcance del Oído" (The Reach of the Ear)
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: Sarah Michelle Gellar named this as one of her favourite episodes.
  • Deleted Scene: In the original scene of Buffy fighting the telepathic demons she said, "Say ‘Uncle.’ Oops. No mouth". This was deleted from the final cut.
  • Development Gag: Xander compares Wesley to Pierce Brosnan. The character was compared to James Bond in the outline - "He thinks he's Sean Connery when he's really George Lazenby".
  • Distanced from Current Events: The episode was delayed from April to September 1999 when the Columbine Massacre happened four days before its set air date.
  • Executive Meddling: The WB refused to air the episode, as the plot involved a plot to mass-murder students (with a Red Herring that it would be by shooting). It was supposed to be the next episode to air following Columbine, so the network instead aired a rerun of "Band Candy". The irony is that Buffy keeps the character Jonathan from killing himself, which makes it all the more significant that he is the one to give her the Class Protector Award in "The Prom", the episode that was originally to air after "Earshot". Out of Order like that, it makes little sense.
  • Out of Order: The original airing of this episode was delayed by the network because the episode deals with an (apparent) attempted mass murder at a high school. It was to air just a week after the mass murder at Columbine High School in April 1999; hence Oz's quip that school massacres are "bordering on trendy." The WB was unamused, and "Earshot" did not air until five months later, on the eve of the next season.
  • Throw It In!: Anthony Stewart Head either genuinely ran into the tree at the end by accident, or the actor ad-libbed it. As stated on the main recap page, he never dreamed that Joss would include it, but it makes for one of the funniest scenes in an episode full of them.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Buffy's class discuss Othello. In the original script, they discussed Henry VIII (you can still see this written on the board later in the episode) or The Catcher in the Rye, but Joss Whedon rewrote the scene to make it have more meaning to Buffy’s feelings.
    • Freddy Iverson was originally named Freddy Munson.
