Trivia / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S2E14 "Innocence"

Go To

  • Completely Different Title:
    • Finnish: Enkeli vai Paholainen? (Angel or Demon?)
    • German: Der gefallene Engel (The Fallen Angel)
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: This is Joss Whedon's favourite episode, while Kristine Sutherland told The BBC that this is her favorite episode as a fan. Casting director Marcia Shulman also named this as her favourite.
  • Deleted Role: The actors credited as "Teacher" and "Student" do not actually appear in the episode. The scene they were appeared, which revolved around Buffy running out of class after a series of dark thoughts about having sex the night before, was cut due to time.
  • The Other Darrin: In the flashback scenes of Buffy and Angel making love, the heavy breathing wasn't voiced by David and Sarah, but rather by series creator Joss Whedon and supervising sound editor Cindy Rabideau. (Apparently Joss was too embarrassed to ask the stars to record it.)
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: The pouring rain in the scene where Xander visits the military base to steal a rocket launcher was not in the script. The rain poured down in the outside shots and Joss was delighted as it added so much atmosphere to the scene.
  • Spared by the Cut:
    • According to James Marsters, the original idea was that Angel would become Angelus and kill Spike to have Drusilla to himself. However, Spike had become so popular with the cast, crew and fans he was instead preserved to serve as Angelus' "jealous little brother".
    • Jenny Calendar was originally supposed to die in this episode.
  • Throw It In!: The scene where Angelus dumps Buffy in his apartment was not supposed to take place there. Halfway through shooting the scene on Buffy's lawn, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz told Joss Whedon that the scene wasn't working, so he moved it to the bedroom. Buffy is still heard saying she saw him at "the house".
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The rocket launcher was originally a tank in the script.
    • In the original script, there is an entire scene of Angelus bantering with Jenny's uncle which was cut. invokedIt's also aged hideously.
      Gypsy Man: You! Evil one.
Angelus: Evil one? Oh, man, now I've got hurt feelings.
Gypsy Man: What do you want?
Angelus: A whole lot. Got a lot of lost time to make up for. Say, I guess that's kind of your fault, isn't it? You Gypsy types, you go and curse people, you really don't care who gets hurt. Of course, you did give me an escape clause, so I gotta thank you for that.
Gypsy Man: You are an abomination. The day you stop suffering for your crimes, you are no longer worthy of a human soul.
Angelus: Well, that pesky little critter's all gone. So we can get down to business... Don't worry, it won't hurt a bit... after the first hour.
    • The following line was cut from the script for length. The Judge's line would have followed Spike's line "So let's take some! I'm bored!" from the beginning of the episode.
I fought an army. They hacked me to pieces. For six hundred years my living head lay in a box buried in the ground. I've learned to be patient.
