Trivia / Brookside

  • Actor Leaves, Character Dies: Anna Friel refused to renew her contract and abruptly quit the series, resulting in a disappointing conclusion to Beth's storyline as she suddenly dies of a never-before-mentioned heart condition in prison off-screen.
  • Creative Differences: Jimmy McGovern quit the show over creators' reluctance to explore the miners' strike and the Hillsborough disaster. He later used the latter as the basis for the Cracker episode "To Be a Somebody" and the Made-for-TV Movie Hillsborough.
  • Creator Backlash: The Brother–Sister Incest storyline went over so badly that Channel 4 was forced to apologise for it and Phil Redmond was finally forced to admit "We got it wrong".
  • Fake Irish: The fine strapping Musgrove lads, who all spoke with County Scouse accents.
  • Friday Night Death Slot: During its final few weeks on air, the show quietly transferred to its new 'graveyard' Saturday afternoon slot, typically starting at around 4:00pm, and the programme was optimistically retooled to fit the new 90 minute daytime only slot.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Gordon Corkhill was originally played by Nigel Crowley and later Mark Burgess.
    • Katie Rogers was originally played by Debbie Reynolds (obviously not this one) and then Diane Burke from 1989.
