  • California Doubling: While the New York scenes were shot on film, almost everywhere else was shot in Los Angeles. The baseball scenes, which take place in New Jersey, were filmed in a business district in San Fernando.
  • Hostility on the Set: Director Walter Hill and Richard Pryor both clashed on set often, especially when Pryor would be deep into drugs on some shooting days. Thankfully they did patch things up by the end of shooting and became good friends after.
  • Missing Episode: The first ever film adaptation, a silent comedy produced in 1914, has no surviving copies.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Walter Hill agreed to direct the 1985 version because he needed a commercial hit.
    • According to Hill, this was why Richard Pryor signed on too.
  • What Could Have Been: Peter Bogdanovich planned a version starring John Ritter.
