• Fake Nationality:
  • Some of the Native characters are played by actors of Asian descent. For example, Sandrine Holt (Annuka) has a Chinese father and a French mother.
  • Lothaire Bluteau as Father LaForgue is a partial aversion, his character is French and the actor is French-Canadian, but Canada didn't yet exist during the film's setting. Most of the other French characters are likewise played by Canadians.
  • Daniel is played by an Australian actor.
• Misplaced Wildlife: A couple of mild examples, misplaced in time rather than space. The eastern phoebe and Wilson's snipe are both found in eastern Canada, but both migrate south in the winter. The snipe, in particular, would be long finished with its flight displays by the time the snow started to fall.
• Saved from Development Hell: Bruce Beresford spent six years trying to get the film made, but no American studio was willing to finance it. It was only after his film Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture and Dances with Wolves swept the Oscars that investors finally showed interest, just not the way he wanted. Even then, he had to produce the film in Canada with the fraction of the typical Hollywood budget.
