Trivia / Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too

Go To

  • Approval of God: Trent Reznor is a fan of the show, so he immediately approved Charlie Brooker's proposal of adapting Nine Inch Nails as pop music in the episode, and was blown away at the results, specially in how authentic "On a Roll" felt. (for what it's worth, fellow NIN member Atticus Ross had already done the music for "Crocodile")
  • California Doubling: This episode takes place in Southern California but was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. (Notably, the scenes at Ashley and Catherine's Malibu beach house were filmed in November 2018, when the real Malibu had been evacuated due to wildfires.)
  • Defictionalization:
    • A music video for "On a Roll" was released about a week after the episode debuted on Netflix. However, the last minute does have some Black Mirror-style corruption going on.
    • The following day, an EP with "On a Roll" and the song performed at the Ashley Eternal presentation, "Right Where I Belong," was released digitally on music platforms. In a case of Hilarious in Hindsight and possibly Misaimed Fandom, the EP has hit #8 on the iTunes global charts and is arguably more popular with music fans than the episode was with Black Mirror fans.
    • Miley Cyrus made an appearance as Ashley O during her set at the Glastonbury Festival on June 30th, 2019. She sung "On a Roll," which then turned into a performance of Nine Inch Nails's version of "Head Like a Hole" as herself.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Unintentionally, though. Right before Miley Cyrus was supposed to film the scene where Ashley O wakes up from her coma and breaks down, Cyrus learned about the 2018 California wildfire, where her home had burned to the ground. She went on to say this is what motivated her breakdown scene and caused her to cry even more.
  • Fake American: Angourie Rice, who is from Australia, plays the American Rachel.
