The Film
- Acclaimed Flop: Despite rave reviews and even winning the Golden Space Needle Award at the Seattle International Film Festival note , it only made just short of $300,000 and closed after two weeks. Luckily the film did very well on DVD and showings on Starz which prompted Adult Swim to pick up an animated spin off.
- Awesome, Dear Boy: Arsenio Hall agreed to a cameo when he saw the script had a character called "Captain Kangaroo Pimp."
- Box Office Bomb: Budget: $2,900,000, Box office: $296,557.
- Cast the Expert: Michael Jai White holds black belts in no less than seven different styles of martial arts.
- Completely Different Title:
- Taiwan: Black Kill Order
- Throw It In!:
- Deliberately parodying the tendency of Blaxploitation films to do this. An example includes a Mook whose car door gets stuck on a curb, and later another Mook forgets to put the brakes on his car while getting out to shoot. In the DVD extras, they explain that the latter was an actual error, not an intentional "error". Naturally, they kept it in.
- "But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs in the community!" was improvised.
- Viral Marketing: FightSmackInTheOrphanage.org, "because orphans don't have parents."
- What Could Have Been: Eddie Murphy was offered a cameo, but declined. Arsenio Hall was cast instead.
The Animated Series
- Actor Allusion:
- Samuel L. Jackson as an ocean expert who gets eaten in the middle of a speech during "Black Jaws"
- John Dimaggio is also quite familiar with deadly clowns.
- Screwed by the Network: Despite decent viewership numbers, the show was cancelled by Adult Swim after two seasons. Reasons are unknown, but the show's very detailed animation caused the show to become too expensive for the network, causing them to ax the show.
