• Actor Allusion: Naldo was once in a band in an alternate timeline; his father was also in a band in the 70s. Both characters' actor, Ricky Garcia, is also in a band (Forever in Your Mind, who also does the theme song and the "Shake Your Booty" cover for the episode of the same name).
  • In "The Butterscotch Effect", Stephen Full is a pizza delivery guy; in an alternate timeline, he is a drummer in a rock band.
  • Portland, OR is the same setting of Crash & Bernstein, Landry Bender's previous show.
• Dawson Casting: Most actors are older than the characters they portray. However, Landry Bender and Benjamin and Matthew Royer are the exact same ages as their characters.
• What Could Have Been: Taylor and Bender were originally cast for a pilot called Fairest of the Mall which would've been about an Alpha Bitch and Cute Bookworm being forced by circumstance into becoming friends while navigating daily life in the titular mall. Another idea was to make it a modern day Snow White set at a mall, where the mean girl forces the heroine to lose her job, only for her to be taken in by a bunch of techo-geeks; the character of Barry originated as the main techno/dwarf counterpart. The pilot wasn't ordered to series, but the network liked Taylor's and Bender's chemistry enough to have them be cast as the leads to Best Friends Whenever.
  • It has been said that an early idea was to make the show about a married couple who go back in time to go to school with their kids, called "Growing Up and Down." Raini Rodriguez and Adam Irigoyen were both attached to play the leads. Reportedly, this was retooled after being compared to Poof Point.
• You Might Remember Me from...: Cyd and Shelby are portrayed by Landry Bender and Lauren Taylor, the former well known for her role as Cleo in Crash & Bernstein, and the latter well known for her role as Harper in Netflix's Richie Rich.
