Trivia / Bayonetta 3

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff: Julie Nathanson not only voices Baal, she also provides her singing voice.
  • Colbert Bump: Ironically, the controversy of Hellena Taylor and a call for a boycott caused the game to become more known in the public conscious. It was enough popularity to cause the game to spike from not being on any best sellers list on Amazon to becoming 27th on their gaming best seller and 9th on the new game releases. The fact that her boycott was revealed through Bloomberg, then confirmed by Taylor (in a Twitter thread intended to make her out to be telling the truth) to be based on, at best, misunderstanding and lies by omission further boosted the sales.
  • Creator-Driven Successor: This game takes many of the elements from Astral Chain to the next level. Infernal Demons function similarly to the Legions but are at a much larger scale. Both function on a magic meter which causes them to disappear if it runs out or if they take too much damage. Pressing ZL at the end of a combo with perfect timing activates a powerful finisher similar to the Sync Attacks with Legions. The game also repurposes mechanics from the canceled Scalebound in allowing the protagonist to summon demons and/or partnering with giant kaiju sized monsters to help them fight in battle.
  • Development Gag: An early design of Gomorrah for Bayonetta 2 gave it a T. rex-esque, bipedal body type. This design would eventually be used here for Sin Gomorrah.
  • Dueling Games:
  • Fake Brit: Canadian-American voice actress Jennifer Hale is the voice of the British Bayonetta in this game.
  • Flip-Flop of God: Accusations of this have been made due to the game's scenario writer Hideki Kamiya, artist Mari Shimazaki, and Bayonetta's original voice actress Hellena Taylor having endorsed Bayonetta/Jeanne as official in the past, making it seem like they had gone back on this in 3 by making Bayonetta and Luka Redgrave an Official Couple instead.
  • No Port For You: The game will be exclusive to Nintendo platforms, specifically the Nintendo Switch, as like with its predecessor, Nintendo's funding is the reason PG could develop a third game. Hideki Kamiya would joke that it could come to other systems if you asked Nintendo hard enough... and while you're at it, ask them to do the same for Mario and Zelda.
  • One-Take Wonder: According to Anna Brisbin, who voices Viola, she nailed her delivery of Viola sarcastically mocking Bayonetta and saying, "You've only got nine lives, kitty!" in one take. Despite Brisbin wanting a second take of the line, the voice director apparently found the initial delivery to be perfect enough.
  • The Other Darrin:
  • Refitted for Sequel: Less "for sequel" and more "from cancelled project". Bayo fighting alongside the demons she summons brings to mind the dragon controlling aspect of Scalebound. Considering the game's director, Yusuke Miyata, was also the lead designer of Scalebound, this was likely intentional. Additionally, Viola calling to mind Nero seems to also be recycled from Scalebound, whose main character was a Nero Expy in appearance.
  • Sequel Gap: Bayonetta 2 was released in 2014. 3 released in 2022, eight years later.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • After talks with Hellena Taylor broke down due to pay disputes, she was still offered a brief unspecified cameo role. Presumably, Taylor would've voiced Bayonetta β0 (the classic-style Bayonetta who is killed off in the prologue) and/or Bayonetta 1 and 2, who arrive to help Prime Bayonetta during the final battle.
    • According to former Game Informer editor Imran Khan, 3 was meant to have more of a sandbox structure but due to the team struggling with pacing the game as well as performance issues, Nintendo advised Platinum Games to scale it back from a sandbox to a linear adventure.
